FAQs. Frequently
Asked Questions
Q. I downloaded a FREE New
Book but only got the first part. How do I get the rest?
A. Next time you Log on, using the same username & password
as you did when you downloaded the first part of the book, you will be
offered the complete book, also FREE.
Q. I have downloaded a book
from Bookselecta but cannot open it.
A. The most common cause is because you have not installed and activated
the latest version of MS Reader. Go to the Microsoft MS
Reader page and get a FREE download now. See Activation below.
Q. Do I need to activate
MS Reader.
A. Only if you are trying to download a protected ebook. To find out
more about protected ebooks read the FAQ on DRM below.
Q. How do I activate MS Reader.
A. Open any MS Reader ebook and you will see a tab on the MS cover
page labelled shop. Press this and select Activate. You will be taken
to the MS Reader page where you can follow the instructions to activate
up to four devices.
Q. What is DRM?
A. DRM stands for Digital Rights Management which is applied to
MS Reader ebooks to prevent unauthorised copying and distribution. A
publisher can choose which level of DRM to apply to the ebooks he produces.
The basic level is DRM2 which produces a sealed ebook - this can be read
on any device but the book itself cannot be edited or altered. The highest
level of Digital Rights Management is DRM5 which results in an owner exclusive
ebook; these can only be read from devices that have the latest version
of MS Reader installed and Activated. Note: Up to 4 devices can be activated
using the same MS net passport.
Q. I have downloaded and
activated MS Reader but still cannot download or open a DRM5 ebook.
A. Open an MS Reader ebook on your PC and check the message on the cover
- Activated for ---------.
Make sure this gives the same email address that you used when you bought
the book.
A. Another common
problem is that you may have a Firewall installed that prevents downloading
an ebook. De-activate your Firewall and trying the download again.
Q. I purchased an ebook
from Bookselecta but the download failed. Do I have to purchase the book
again?
A. No. When you purchase an
ebook from Bookselecta the download begins immediately. We also send
you an e-mail with a download link (url). Copy and paste this into your
browser and you can try the download again.
Q. Pocket PC. Problems with
DRM5 ebooks.
A. Some people have been having trouble updating the Microsoft Reader
on their Pocket PC because the program has been burnt into ROM. So the
update looks like it completes, but actually doesn't. If your version
of Microsoft Reader is installed in ROM (which means it was preinstalled
by the manufacturer), you cannot uninstall Microsoft Reader. You can,
however, install a RAM version of the program. To ensure you've got the
new version of Microsoft Reader on your Pocket PC device, follow these
steps:
1. Tap the Start menu, then Settings.
2. Choose the System tab, and select Remove Programs.
3. Highlight "Microsoft Reader." Tap Remove to uninstall Microsoft Reader.
If Microsoft Reader does not appear in this list, your version is installed
in ROM: you may continue through the rest of these steps.
4. Visit the Pocket PC download page (http://microsoft.com/reader/downloads/ppc.asp)
to download the latest version of Microsoft Reader.
5. When prompted, indicate that you'd like to install Microsoft Reader.
You'll need to confirm this option on your PC and on your Pocket PC. Be
sure the device is cradled when you run the installation program.
6. While your device is cradled, visit the activation pages (http://das.microsoft.com/activate/en-us/default.asp)
to activate your Pocket PC: sign in, then choose Activate my Pocket PC.
Q. Can I get a refund if I am
unable to read the book I bought?
A. That depends. If the problem is at our end, of course we will credit
your account or make a refund. If the problem is entirely your end, then
in most cases we cannot give a refund. This is because many of the books
you buy come from other publishers and we will have to pay them for your
download.
